Abstract
The main objective of this investigation is to improve the performance and cleaning up diesel engine's exhaust by fumigating methanol and by adding fuel additives of known percentages. To control the emission from diesel engine and to improve performance, alternate fuel and incylinder control techniques were used. The experimental study was carriedout in a single cylinder diesel engine. A waste heat recovery heat exchanger was provided to preheat the inlet air by utilizing exhaust gas heat. The experimental setup is such that the methanol is fumigated in the heat exchanger very near to the intake manifold. The results of an experimental investigation relating to the performance characteristics by fumigating methanol and fuel additive are reported. The result shows an appreciable reduction of emissions such as particulate matter, Oxides of nitrogen, Smoke density and marginal increase in the performance when compared with normal diesel engine.
