Abstract
This paper highlights the enormous importance of correct material and process selection. This is based on many years of work in both the field of heat-treatment and consulting on material and process problem analysis including problem solving. For engineered ferrous and non-ferrous materials to perform longer and better under long and arduous conditions, it is necessary for engineers, metallurgists, product designers, process engineers to gain a greater understanding of the material performance before and after heat-treatment and processing techniques. An understanding of the material behavior during selected process techniques is also of great importance. The paper will be important to those who are presently involved in both material and process selection as it will outline some of the present methods and introduce the reader to a more scientific approach to this important subject.
