Abstract
The Reaction Carrier is used in the heavy-duty version of the GM - 4L60E transmission. The unique assembly comprises a Spider and a Clutch Hub that are pressed separately in FL4408 and FC0208 materials. During the subsequent sintering operation where the two components are brazed together to combine the planetary gear carrier function with clutch and one-way clutch hubs. The Spider section is also copper infiltrated during the sintering process in order to meet the requirements for elastic modulus and strength.
This paper describes the design and development of a powder metal (PM) carrier and optimization materials and processes in order to achieve targets in material strength and suitability for manufacturing, including machining.
