Abstract
This paper presents the results of experimental work conducted on a catalytically activated two stroke spark ignited engine to investigate the cyclic variation of combustion parameters. A comparitive study was carried out with the base engine for finding out the effect of catalytic activation. The catalyst selected for this purpose is copper chromate which is found to be the most effective and optimal catalyst in the science of physical chemistry.
The coating is carried out on the inside surface of combustion chamber walls and piston crown by Thermal evaporation technique. The in-cylinder pressures were recorded for 1000 continuous cycles using a piezo electric pressure pickup and PC based data acquisition system. The variations in peak pressure are compared with base engine.
The results show that the catalyst coating activates the preflame reaction and shortens the combustion duration. The cyclic variation of combustion parameters were less than the base engine and the mean value of the peak pressures were found to have upper shift. It is found that the coated engine performed better than the base engine during running.
