Abstract
In early design phase, model simulations are intended to represent the global behavior of the investigated system. For this purpose, in the last decade, the use of multibody models has become generalized in automotive safety. Nevertheless, the definition of these models is not easy and need to be validated with experimental results (crash tests). Indeed, some of the model parameters are not directly identified with experimental procedures (subsystem tests) and those parameters need to be determined with the help of engineer know-how in a trial and error procedure.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a numerical approach employed in the parameter identification and in the correlation of the model on crash results. In the first part, we describe the modeling process which is employed in early design phase of vehicle interiors components. We then provide a description of the parameter identification problematic and show what is at stake in the complexity management of the model correlation. In order to manage this complexity, we propose a numerical method based on a functional approach. This method is explained and, then, applied on different safety model correlations.
