Abstract
The description and characterization of novel, low firing energy, semiconductor based, scaleable monolithic electro-explosive devices (EEDs) is presented. One device consists of a metallic (palladium) bowtie-shaped heating element, which has been selectively coated with a reactive metal (zirconium) to enhance ignition of a conventional pyrotechnic mix. Another structure employs laminations of thin layers of boron and titanium. Integrated diodes provide protection against electro-static discharge (ESD) events. The devices were specifically configured to allow ease of interconnect by wirebonds, conductive epoxy or solder. The structures were fabricated with conventional microelectronic techniques which allow for very economical manufacturing.
