Optimization of interior sound of sports cars
Published September 07, 2000 by AVL List GmbH in Australia
The enjoyment of driving a sports car is strongly connected to emotions. One important aspect to enhance emotions is an optimum interior sound of such cars. Especially, during acceleration such a sound has to support vehicle performance and overall vehicle quality. The first step to develop an interior sound of sports cars is to determine a target sound. It is useful for a manufacturer of sports cars to have an index that describes the level of an interior sound quality using objective parameters. This sound quality index can reduce effort and time to decide the target sound. But there are only a few papers that described the interior sound quality for sports cars. In this paper, a new analysis method which is developed to describe the interior sound for sports cars on an objective basis is presented. The development process of this objective description of sports car sound and the results obtained are described. An further, the perceptive difference between Austrian and Japanese are also presented. By using such objective methods in the future, the necessary sound engineering process can be effectively guided and thus reduced in time and effort for achieving the optimum target sound for special brands of sports cars.
Our approach to make the sound index is shown. This approach has been applied for the annoyance scale of passenger cars and would be available for all vehicle sound research.
Selection of Austrian panelists is performed very carefully using a statistical method.
The selected panelists are the men who consider interior sound quality very important, and therefore they are suitable for subjective evaluation of interior sound quality of sports cars.
