Concept development tool for flexible generation of parametric virtual prototypes in car body design

In the development and design of car bodies, car manufacturers face short development cycles as well as rising number of model variations and body types. Digital concept models are assessed using FE methods to evaluate the properties of different body concepts. Due to their geometric approach, CAD tools are less suitable for a fast generation and parametric modification of design models. In contrast to CAD tools the presented concept design tool follows a topological approach. It enables a fast generation of fully parametrical car body models whose topology and geometry can easily be modified. The topological approach guarantees that the geometry follows the topological description when modifying the model. This functionality enables a rapid virtual prototyping of car body concepts and an easy derivation of car body variants. During this process, the models can be assessed by FE methods and transferred into CAD tools by standardized interfaces.
