Abstract
An experimental research program has been performed in a four-cylinder spark-ignition optical engine operating with direct injection of compressed natural gas (CNG) into one of its cylinders through a high-pressure fuel injection system. Comparison with low pressure CNG injection into the intake port has revealed that the direct-injection concept offers significant promise in CNG-fueled engines as a result of the increased power output, resulting from the higher volumetric efficiency, and the lower NOx and fuel consumption levels achieved through extension of the engine's lean operating limit and charge stratification, respectively.
