A novel method for simulating polydisperse fuel sprays

The polydisperse nature of a fuel spray has, until now, always been accounted for by discretizing the droplet size distribution into discrete droplet groups. This new model considers the spray as a whole, and characterizes the droplet size distribution in terms of its moments. These moments directly represent the number, mean radius, surface area and volume of the droplets present in any local control volume. By constructing moment-average properties, such as moment-average velocities, the model is able to simulate the differences in the behavior of droplets of differing sizes, and hence capture the full polydisperse nature of the spray.
