Abstract
A new chassis was developed by Freightliner Corporation to serve as the foundation for a High Mobility Aircraft Rescue and Fire-Fighting (ARFF) Vehicle. The vehicle was to be jointly produced by Freightliner and Rosenbauer, a large fire apparatus manufacturer in Austria. This paper will discuses the requirements for this type of application and the criteria for elements of the design and testing, focusing on the suspension and frame assembly. In addition, some new virtual prototyping tools will be reviewed. These were valuable in helping to bring the chassis from a clean sheet of paper to market in approximately 2 years.
