Abstract
In response to world environmental concerns, JATCO TransTechnology engineers have been driven to lower fuel consumption of Automatic Transmissions [1]. Our response was to construct a lightweight, compact, 4-speed automatic transmission that uses a neutral idle control, and slipping torque converter lock-up control. This transmission was planned for small cars, adopting powertrains with a reduced number of one-way clutches and small-sized, highly efficient torque converters [2].
