Abstract
Since the early days of rubber-tired vehicle design, when it was found that carbon black dramatically increased the wear resistance of tire compounds, this engineering additive has had a close relationship with elastomers. Both in its traditional forms, available for decades, and in new structures and surface types, carbon black continues to enhance elastomers for a range of automotive needs. This paper discusses the most important of these enhancements in relation to 4 applications: hose, extrusions, dynamic & sealing, and electrically conductive parts. Basic design considerations are discussed, as well as a broad-brush look into the future of carbon blacks for each application.
