Abstract
This paper reports on different engine concepts to meet the emission and noise regulations being expected beyond the year 2000 taking into consideration fuel economy and cost. These concepts comprise diesel engines with or without exhaust aftertreatment devices and engines for alternative fuels such as Dimethyl Ether. Fuel injection and turbocharger technology, exhaust gas recirculation, DeNOx systems or particulate traps and the required fuel specifications are discussed as main influences. A short description of important design characteristics completes the presentation.
