Turbulent flame propagation under the condition of lean mixture

The turbulent flames in a spark-ignition engine close to the condition of lean limit were measured by means of laser tomography. The flames in lean limit had a small structure that the unburned gas entrained into the burned gas, or were obstructed by turbulence and the partial quenching was observed. The fractal analysis was performed assuming that the flame had a connected flame sheet. Consequently, the fractal dimension in lean limit increased frequently. The values of fractal dimension reached 1.45 larger than that of non-reaction turbulence.
