Comparison of the spray characteristics of alternative GDI fuel injection systems under atmospheric and elevated pressure operation

A key component of a GDI combustion system is the fuel injection equipment. To design and optimize such systems requires a fundamental understanding of detailed spray behavior for the fuel injector to be used. Lotus Engineering, in partnership with Loughborough University, has developed a suite of test facilities and laser diagnostic techniques to enable full characterization of fuel spray development under a range of representative engine operating conditions.
This paper compares the spray characteristics of alternative GDI injectors using these facilities and laser techniques. Careful consideration has been given to the validity of the spray characterization results by cross referencing the data collected using each technique.
