Abstract
An integrated manufacturing system for automotive valve-stem
seals is presented. The proposed system will combine a number of
automated processes (molding, trimming, inspection, springing and
stacking for post-cure) to reduce production costs by reducing the
labor content. Moreover, scrap rates will be reduced due to reduced
process variability. Reduced "work in progress' (WIP) will
also allow "just-in-time' (JIT) implementation.
Due to the critical nature of the valve-stem seal, 100%
inspection of all manufactured seals is required. This will include
inspection for critical defects, which restrict the seal
performance, as well as for defects that affect the outer
appearance of the product. As commercially available inspection
systems can only deal with part of this complex inspection task, a
high-speed intelligent inspection algorithm, based on greyscale
image processing, is to be implemented to provide on-line quality
control.
