Abstract
Rapid Prototyping technologies are evolving very quickly from
the provision of geometrical models towards the fast and economical
realization of processing tools. Existing and potential
applications of RPT for the realization of injection molds for
plastics are very diversified and already applied. This
presentation goes into details about the real capabilities and
limitations of state-of-the-art prototype mold making techniques
like resin casting and metal spraying. Quantification of global
process, economical performance and product quality are presented.
Further on, the latest developments of existing technologies like
direct cavity manufacturing by stereolithography, Selective Laser
Sintering and Laminated Laser Cut Cavities will be described and
existing applications detailed.
Capabilities of other downstream techniques as vacuum casting
and LP-RIM (Low-Pressure Reaction Injection Molding) for functional
and technical prototypes are compared to those of injection molding
with Rapid Tooling.
