Analysis of depth feeling in appearance of flake pigments

The appearance and quality of objects are controlled by paint coatings on the surfaces of the objects. Recently, the depth feeling in the appearance of paint coatings has attracted special attention. Flake pigments with variation in brightness are observed, especially in metallic paint coatings because of their different sizes and orientations. Therefore, the texture of the flake pigments should be focused. We, first, made sure that the depth feeling was a significant factor of quality. Next, the perception mechanism and the evaluation method of this depth feeling have been studied based on a perspective model. The effects of the flake pigments in the paint coatings on the appearance were analyzed using fifty samples. It is clarified that the depth feeling can be quantitatively evaluated according to the variation in the area ratio considered by each flake pigment area and the difference between the maximum and minimum areas.
