Abstract
This paper addresses issues related to the weld line location
for tailor welded blanks (TWB). While TWB technology offers many
benefits, new design and manufacturing guidelines need to be
developed and proven to ensure ease of introduction of this
technology.
The paper discusses the use of the FTI FAST-3D package to
explore some product and process design issues related to weld line
design on the final product after stamping. A comparison between
traditional development work (tryout), incremental FEM technology
and FAST-3D is also presented. It is shown that FAST-3D can be used
as a front end tool to design TWB, as well as to calculate blank
size, blank location and location of the weld line on the original
blank so that the location of the weld line on the final component
can be produced within body engineering specifications.
