Abstract
A compact and high-speed rangefinding system is proposed and a method for reconstructing the 3-D shape is described. The principle of depth measurement of the rangefinder is based on the space encoding method. Spatially encoded patterns of light are generated by a semiconductor laser. A slit-ray of the laser is scanned by a rotating mirror and switched according to the temporal switching patterns. Each pattern of light is generated and its reflected image is taken by a CCD camera in one image frame with no lag time. A fine resolution range map (512 x 256) is obtained within 0.3 seconds. In the paper, experimental results of range imaging are indicated. 3-D shape reconstruction was completed by integrating the range maps taken from various view directions.
