Spectal Analysis Application to Engine Diagnostics

Spectral analysis appeared to be a promising diagnostic tool for diesel injection system. Preliminary analysis performed so far, and presented in this paper, evidenced that through spectral analysis it is possible to find out a difference among healthy and faulty cycles. In fact, corresponding amplitudes spectra resulted to be different, in the same way also under different operating conditions. However, results achieved so far through spectral analysis in practice confirm in the frequency domain what happens in time domain for injection pressure cycle. Further research is to be carried on, simulating different injector and injection system failure modes, in order to assess if the changements in amplitudes spectrum, detected for some frequencies with low opening pressure are characteristic of this failure mode, and to characterize the amplitudes spectrum relative to each failure mode.
