Volvo's developments in vehicle safety
Published October 29, 1992 by SAE Australasia in Australia
A new Side Impact Protection system, SIPS, was developed for the new Volvo 850. It consists of a combination of reinforced body structure and an interior that reduces chest and pelvis injuries by 25%. To calculate this reduction a new tool was used that correlates laboratory test data with accident data. Thus, a probable injury reduction for a new design can be calculated before the car is on the road.
An accident study on neck injuries is then presented.
Finally, unique solutions in the areas of integrated child protection systems and offset crash protection are presented.
