As matters begin to settle in terms of connector types, charge-station makers are ramping up to meet the needs of a growing population of plug-in vehicles.

SAE International is working to ensure that the charging infrastructure doesn't get in the way of an electric vehicle (EV) future.

Already in place is an SAE standard, J1772, that spells out the performance and physical characteristics of the charge coupler for slower charging rates. The basic charging system defined in J1772 is ac Level I, which uses the common 120-V ac outlet; ac Level II uses a 240-V outlet.
