Engineers are focusing on active systems integration, especially with radars and cameras, more centralized processing, and silicon germanium for 77-GHz systems.

The move to employ active safety systems is moving into full gear. Automakers and suppliers are taking more steps to provide sensors and electronic controls that see imminent threats and take action to avoid them.

Much of the current activity is centered on avoiding frontal collisions, using radar and other sensors to determine when vehicles are getting too close too fast. Cameras are primary complements to radar, helping the control systems ensure that they take action only when collisions are not preventable.
