The scope and purpose of the SAE Recommended Practice is to provide standards for the control and indication of parking brakes in hydraulic braked vehicles over 4540 kg (10 000 lb) GVWR. This recommended practice pertains to automatic transmission applications and supplements the SAE J915 recommended practice. This recommended practice does not address parking brake system performance. Parking brake system performance, both static and dynamic conditions, is the responsibility of the OEM vehicle manufacturer or manufacturers that modify the vehicle by adding special vocational required equipment (such as but not limited to outriggers, cranes, etc.).
Rationale
There are several parking brake indication and control philosophies for hydraulic braked vehicles with a GVWR greater than 4540 kg (10 000 lb). For future vehicle and parking brake system designs, this recommended practice is intended to be a guide for consideration. The implementation of this new recommended practice will reduce operator confusion and promote standardization in all hydraulic braked vehicles. This recommended practice is intended to supplement the SAE J915 Automatic Transmissions - Manual Control Sequence recommended practice as it relates to the various parking brake indication options.
Major vehicle manufacturers were surveyed and current practices were identified to assist in the development of this document. Where necessary or possible all current practices were included in this document to allow for alternative methods to provide the specific functions.
The task force recognized that both the “P” and “PB” indication options existed in current vehicle applications. The team evaluated the benefits and risks of both approaches and the following is a summary of the results. In conclusion it was decided to recommend the “PB” indication as the standard method.
"PB":
○
gives indication to the driver that the parking mechanism is a friction-based product that wears and can yield over time
○
is different from a park pawl in that it can sometimes be released independently by other manual means
○
may not be acceptable in Canada (French language and ISO complications)
"P":
○
minimizes confusion for driver ("why should he or she care how vehicle is held in park, as long as it is")
Besides the indication recommendations, a transmission parking pawl and a mechanical friction parking brake should not be actuated with the same or single actuation device or method. Besides the operator not knowing which parking brake function is actually holding the vehicle, there can be binding and brake release sequence issues with having a single parking actuation function.
The Truck and Bus Hydraulic Brake Committee of the Truck and Bus Brake and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Steering Committee is responsible for developing, reviewing, and approving recommended practices, standards, and information reports related to brake systems on hydraulically braked trucks and buses over 10,000 lbs (4500 Kg) GVWR designed for on-highway use. The responsibility of this committee will include the following related aspects of hydraulically braked vehicles with due care given to coordinate with and avoid duplicating efforts of the other committees: Braking performance - system components performance (to include but not limited to actuation systems, foundation brake, park brake, electronically controlled brake systems and anti-lock brake systems)
* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.

Search Tips: Search Operators:AND, OR, NOT; Wild Cards; Using Quotes
SAE MOBILUS® Search Tips
Please note: All terms not contained within quotes, will be evaluated using the OR operator. This means that your search results will contain all results that contain ANY of the entered terms.
AND, OR, NOT
SAE MOBILUS supports the use of the AND, OR and NOT BOOLEAN operators ONLY function with the Advanced Search.
Wild Cards
Using the asterisk, ( * ) allows you to search for a partial word. For example, entering a keyword search of aero* will search for any word beginning with aero.
Using the question mark, ( ? ) allows you to search for a word with a single character wildcard. For example, searching for t?re would match both tire and tyre
Using Quotes
Words in double quotes " " are treated as a phrase. Conducting a search for "heat model" will return all results in which the exact phrase "heat model" is found, while "heat modeling" would NOT be included.
A term combined with a phrase will be joined with an OR operator.
Searching for Standards
When searching for a standard please use the entire Document Number assigned, which includes the abbreviation. A space can be used, or omitted between the abbreviation and number.
