Scope
The purpose of this SAE Information Report is to describe currently known automotive active stability enhancement systems, as well as identify common names which can be used to refer to the various systems and common features and functions of the various systems. The primary systems discussed are:
-
a
ABS—Antilock Brake Systems
-
b
TCS—Traction Control Systems
-
c
ESC—Electronic Stability Control
The document is technical in nature and attempts to remain neutral regarding unique features that individual system or vehicle manufacturers may provide.
Rationale
The basic reason for the changes requested to J2564 is the evolution of technology. The technology has changed and improved in the years since the original publication of the document. In addition, there have been repeated requests to come up with a generic name for the Stability Technology. The group agreed on the term ESC as the term the industry should use for this technology. The heart of the document remains the same, just minor acronym udating.

Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committee
The Vehicle Dynamics Standards Committee (VDSC) reports to the Vehicle Performance Steering Committee. The VDSC develops Information Reports, Recommended Practices and Standards related to the dynamics of passenger cars and light trucks, excluding trailers. The committee establishes tests and analyses that contribute to the understanding of the ride and handling performance of the total vehicle as a dynamic system.

* Redlines comparisons are available for those standards
listed in the Revision History that contain a radio button. A
redline comparison of the current version against a revision is
accomplished by selecting the radio button next to the standard and
then selecting 'compare'. At this time, Redline versions only exist
for some AMS standards. SAE will continue to add redline versioning
with ongoing updates to SAE MOBILUS.
