J2423_200401 Cab Roof Strength Evaluation - Dynamic Loading Heavy Trucks

Canceled

Scope
Content

This SAE Recommended Practice describes the test procedures for conducting dynamic cab roof strength tests for heavy-truck applications. Its purpose is to establish recommended test procedures which will standardize the procedure for heavy trucks. Descriptions of the test set-up, test instrumentation, photographic/video coverage, and the test fixtures are included.

Rationale
Content
In 1998, SAE J2422 and J2423 were both issued. These RPs addressed test procedures for evaluating the roof strength of heavy trucks. The difference between the two was how the roof load was imposed. SAE J2422 applied a quasi-static load to the cab roof where as SAE J2421 applied a dynamic impact. In 2003, SAE J2422 incorporated pass-fail condictions that paralleled ECE Regulation 29. These also included a defined quasi-static roof load to be applied to the roof. At the same time, SAE J2423 was also changed to reflect some of the ECE Regulation 29 conditions, but did not establish a prescribed magnitude of the energy to be applied to the roof. In section 10 (Performance Requirements) of SAE J2423, it also states "This test procedure is for the purpose of informational studies only and is not an alternative to SAE J2422 due to the lack of the prescirbed magnitude of energy applied to the roof of the vehicle in the second impact." Since SAE J2423 is no longer an alternative to SAE J2422, there is no reason to keep both procedures active. Therefore it is recommended that SAE J2423 by cancelled as an active SAE RP.
