Abstract
In order to investigate the potential of the small uniflow 2-stroke diesel engine, AVL has designed and developed a 3-cylinder engine of 1 litre capacity.
The paper describes how the engine concept was established, shows design details and the progress of the development work on the engine test bench.
The programme was completed with the installation of one prototype engine in a demonstration car for vehicle emission measurements.
