Abstract
The Department of Defense possesses a unique role as both a user and a provider of Air Traffic Services. These roles make the DOD a principal partner in the modernization and automation of the future Air Traffic Control System. This paper illustrates some of the requirements, roles and missions, and integration of the military ATC environment with our civil counterparts. Use of DOD research into high-speed digital automation of radar signals. Secondary Radar signal processing, storm detection using ATC Radar's, modernization of the communications infrastructure and development of future automation systems can provide a framework for joint systems development. The goal of this development is the seamless delivery of ATC services to the flying public that remains safe, cost efficient, and productive.
