Today's car navigation systems are mainly built up of separate modules such as CD-ROM drive, GPS module, navigation module, LCD display. This approach makes them expensive and ergonomically not optimized. Cost of such systems can be drastically reduced through high integration at semiconductor level. This paper describes a localization unit integrating GPS and processing of sensor signals built up with only four chips, and gives an outlook on further system integration built around a dedicated 32 bit navigation processor.
