Authors Abstract
Content
An overview of a modular electronic engine control system developed by Ford Motor Company, is presented including descriptions of associated major subsystem components. Among those discussed are key elements within the fuel delivery, fuel charging, induction, ignition and electronic processing subsystems. The system described encompasses several state of the art technolo gies including low pressure fuel control, thick film electronics and large scale integrated circuit (LSI) implementations. A discussion of the electronic processing subsystem introduces the Ford EEC-IV family of microprocessor based electronic controllers in conjunction with alternative sensor and actuator sets for measuring and controlling selected engine parameters. Typical control strategies for management of air flow, fuel flow, idle speed and ignition timing are reviewed with a discussion of those factors affecting control accuracy and resolution.
