- Some of the major producers of passenger cars in the United States participated in brake performance evaluations to obtain data under severe customer usage conditions. Cars were instrumented to obtain brake lining and brake fluid temperatures, loaded to maximum recommended weights, and driven on public highways from coast to coast in areas where demands on braking would be the greatest. A comparison between the customer usage evaluations and Society of Automotive Engineers brake performance test results indicates that the SAE procedures provide a satisfactory means of evaluation of brakes for customer usage.
