The paper deals with maintaining the efficiency of the engine at different loading conditions. In a 6 cylinder engine, when it is fully loaded it operates with maximum efficiency. But at partly loaded condition, its efficiency drops down. In this paper a 6 cylinder engine is converted into a 4 cylinder engine, so that the part load for 6 cylinder engine acts as a near full load for 4 cylinder engine.
For this, the crankshaft is divided into a number of segments, so that it will be possible to disengage two of the cylinders from the other four cylinders. During this conversion, servo motor is used to vary the crank angle according to the number of cylinders, which in turn is controlled by ECU (Electronic Control Unit).
Even though the cylinder deactivation can also be done by cutting down the fuel supply for one or two cylinders, still the deactivated cylinder produces frictional power loss. By adopting the method in this paper, this loss can be avoided and the engine will also run at prefect balanced condition. Thus the engine will be operated at its maximum efficiency.
