Authors Abstract
Content
Based on the recently released Cummins and Iveco truck diesel engine family with 1 liter per cylinder capacity, 4V per cylinder, high pressure common rail injection and complying with Euro 3 emission standards, a new generation of engines for agricultural and industrial application has been developed and launched into production following the requirements of the third Partner CNH. In order to achieve the required performance for naturally aspirated, turbocharged and intercooled applications, with Tier 2 emission compliance, the swept volume was increased to 1.1 liter per cylinder. For agricultural applications block, sump and gear housing were re-designed to form structural elements of the tractor. Top performance ratings are based on 4V/cyl head design and high pressure common rail injection, carried over from the truck engines. For lower ratings - including naturally aspirated variants VE rotary fuel injection pumps and 2V/cyl heads are applied. Further features of this new engine family include rear gear train, crank-concentric lube oil pump, steel plate cylinder head gasket, optimised power cylinder for reduced oil consumption and a closed crankcase ventilation system. Throughout the development commonality of block and head machine line features with the truck engine and with Cummins B-series engines had to be observed.
