Abstract
The standard ISO 14253-1:1998 establishes that, to prove the conformance with tolerance specifications, the supplier must create a reduced acceptance interval, displacing the specification limits by an amount equal to the value of measurement uncertainty (U95). In this paper the effect of limit displacements on the quality and economy of manufacturing is analysed. The quadratic quality loss function is used to compute internal and external failure costs in batches subjected to 100% inspection with non-ideal measuring instruments. Using computer simulation, it is shown that the total quality loss in the batch is expected to grow with the value of limit displacements due to the massive rejection of conforming units.
